A beautiful village at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, its unique characteristics forced UNESCO to create a specific category for this purpose when classifying it as a World Heritage Site—”cultural landscape”—which thus considers both the natural wealth and the built heritage of the village and the mountain range. The lushly vegetated Serra da Estrela mountain range is located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Nearby, special mention should be made of the beaches (Maçãs, Praia Grande, and Adraga), Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of European continent, Colares, which lends its name to a demarcated wine region, and the picturesque cliffside village of Azenhas do Mar.
